Amelia Gething is an English actress and writer who rose to fame by sharing comedic sketches on social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok. This led to her writing for and starring in the BBC show The Amelia Gething Complex. She subsequently launched her full-fledged acting career appearing in the period drama The Spanish Princess and the biographical film Emily. She also voiced the female protagonist in the video game Hogwarts Legacy.
Early Life
Amelia Gething, who always wanted to pursue an acting career, made plays and sketches for her family members and took part in school productions since an early age. Although she initially wanted to study psychology at university, she decided to leave her sixth form college in Barking early before completing her A Levels when her career began to take off.
Career
Amelia Gething made her first post on her Instagram profile in May 2015. She joined YouTube with her eponymous channel on August 2, 2016, and uploaded her first video, a comedy sketch titled Sushi, on September 2, 2016. The same year, she also wrote and performed sketches on musical.ly, which later became TikTok. However, fame didn’t come to her overnight; in fact, she tried to kick off her social media career three times before she started to gain followers by just posting videos for fun. Once established, she began to partner with brands for promotional content.
As she started to earn money from social media, she invested in a better camera and hired a team to help her produce and edit her sketches. In mid-2018, she was approached by BBC, which invited her to create a female-led sketch comedy show that eventually became The Amelia Gething Complex. The show’s ten-episode first season was released in October 2019 and it was renewed for a second season containing eight episodes, released in March 2021. As she began pursuing a proper acting career, she evolved from making weird comedy on YouTube and TikTok to more serious acting.
In 2020, she played Ursula Pole in the second installment of the Starz historical drama series The Spanish Princess. Two years later, she portrayed Anne Brontë in Frances O'Connor's biographical film Emily, which also starred Emma Mackey, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Fionn Whitehead. She, along with the rest of the cast, was nominated for Best Ensemble Performance at the 2022 British Independent Film Awards. In 2023, she was revealed to be the voice actress for the female player character in the Harry Potter-themed video game Hogwarts Legacy. She has also worked in the upcoming Apple TV+ war drama Masters of the Air and the Belgian mystery drama series The Phoebus Files.
Family Life
Amelia Gething credits her “odd” family members, including mother Louise, a court stenographer, and father Dave, a station manager on London Underground, for her own odd sense of humor. She was romantically linked to singer and fellow muser Houssein South in 2017-18. She is currently dating copywriter James Dutton, whom she met at a dinner party in 2020.
